Abstract: Yukon Bioclimate Zones and Subzones Version 1.0 is derived from a 30 m Digital Elevation Model (DEM) and a set of “rule-polygons”. Each rule-polygon contains attributes that define upper and lower elevation limits of the bioclimate zone/subzone(s) that occur within the rule-polygon. Rule-polygon attributes and extent is defined by field data, expert observation and/or available imagery. Where available, rule-polygons were derived from plot data representative of climate (i.e. reference site). Yukon Bioclimate Zones and Subzones Version 1.0 may be used at scales larger than 1:250,000 with caution. This mapping is deliberately extended across the ocean, lakes, glaciers, etc to facilitate intersection with a terrestrial landcover layer of the user’s choice. A map legend and map for this version is published in Southern Lakes Boreal Low Subzone (BOLsl): A Field Guide to Ecosite (Environment Yukon 2017). The Yukon Bioclimate Classification and Mapping project is ongoing, and subject to periodic updates or revisions. Because of this, the onus is on the end-user to ensure that they are using the most current version of the data. Although every effort has been made to ensure the correctness of the report and spatial products, there still may be errors. Please report errors in the data to the Custodian.Distributed from GeoYukonby the Government of Yukon. Purpose: Development of the Bioclimate Zones and Subzones of Yukon is the culmination of over 10 years of development through the efforts of working groups and project teams. The bioclimate zone/subzone level of the Yukon Bioclimate Ecosystem Classification (YBEC), although broad in scale, is the architecture that organizes larger (more detailed) scale classification down to the site level. For further information about the YBEC system please refer to Southern Lakes Boreal Low Subzone (BOLsl): A Field Guide to Ecosite (Environment Yukon 2017) or Yukon Ecological and Landscape Classification and Mapping Guidelines (Environment Yukon 2016).

Resource lineage:
Lineage statement: Version 1.0 of Bioclimate Zones and Subzones of Yukon is the culmination of over 10 years of development through the efforts of working groups and project teams. Over this time period, Yukon government and DIAND has funded and/or coordinated several workshops and pilot projects to help advance ecosystem classification and mapping in Yukon. Of particular note is the work by the editors of Ecoregions of Yukon: Scott Smith, John Meikle and Charlie Roots to describe Yukon Ecoregions and the original ecoregion line work Perry Diamond, John Meikle, Catherine Kennedy, Peter Henry and Margo Santry and on-going development of Yukon ecoregion delineation by Karen McKenna and John Meikle. Shawn Francis and Nancy Steffen provided the initial foundation for a framework to define Yukon’s bioclimate zones in 2003 and this framework was further developed by EBA engineering consultants (Jack Dennett, Richard Sims, John Grods, Jeff Matheson, Wayne Darlington, Janet Thomas and Karen Warrendorf) with contributions by Yukon government staff (John Meikle, Val Loewen, Gerry Perrier, Fritz Mueller) in 2003. The Ecological and Landscape Classification (ELC) program gratefully acknowledges members of ELC Technical Working Group that contributed to further development of Bioclimate Zones of Yukon through their participation a workshop held in February 2012 in Whitehorse, Yukon: • Del Meidinger (facilitator, forest ecologist, Consultant, Victoria, BC) • Nadele Flynn (chair, Ecological and Landscape Classification Coordinator) • Val Loewen (Inventory coordinator, Habitat branch, Env-YG) • Jennifer Staniforth (Habitat ecologist, Habitat branch, Env-YG) • Shawn Francis (Landscape ecologist, Consultant, Alberta) • John Meikle (Land use planner, Consultant, Whitehorse, Yukon) • Panya Lipovsky (Geologist, Yukon Geological Survey EMR-YG) • Karen McKenna (Soil scientist, surficial geologist, CryoGeographic Consulting, Whitehorse, Yukon) • Donald McLennan (Parks Canada Agency, National Monitoring Biologist., ecologist, Hull, Quebec) • Will MacKenzie (Provincial Research Ecologist, Smithers, BC) Special acknowledgement to Matt Wilkie (Env, Geomatics) who create a GIS tool to automate the bioclimate modeling process. Thank you to Raphael Roy-Jauvin and Mitch Haynen our ELC GradCorps interns who stepped in to provide geomatics support to run bioclimate model scenarios. Table 1.0 provides an overview of the Yukon bioclimate zone/subzone map legend and was extracted from Southern Lakes Boreal Low Subzone (BOLsl): A Field Guide to Ecosite (Environment Yukon 2017).
